Nestled along the picturesque Moselle River, Cochem is a charming little town known for its historical Altstadt, vineyards and a majestic Reichsburh Castle. It is a perfect destination for one-day trip, but if you have more time, you can take a long hike or visit one of historical towns nearby (with castles as well).
This guide will help you explore the best of Cochem and leave positive footprints meanwhile.
Why Visit Cochem
Cochem is a charming town just half an hour drive from Koblenz. With a population of about 5,500, it is the largest town on the Lower Moselle River and a major tourist attraction.
First mentioned in 866, Cochem was originally inhabited by Celts and Romans. While you can still see remains of the Roman architecture, the biggest legacy that has made it into the present is the vineyards!
However, the highlight is the majestic Reichsburg Castle, providing a picturesque view over the Moselle River and a gateway to vineyards.
Best Things to Do and See in Cochem
Visit Cochem Castle
Cochem Castle, a stunning late-Gothic structure, towers over 100 meters above the Moselle River.

It was designed for all-round defense. The castle’s Romanesque fragments date back to around 1056.

You can walk or drive up until the castle free but entry is only allowed through guided tours. Tired on the way? No problem, have a drink at a restaurant right next to the castle and enjoy the views over the town and vineyards.
Explore the Altstadt
Cochem’s Old Town is small yet picturesque, just 10 minutes away from the main train station.

The central Marktplatz is home to the 1739 Baroque town hall, a medieval stone clock tower, and a charming fountain.
There, you can get a locally roasted coffee from Cochemer Kaffeerösterei.

The town still has three medieval gates, with Enderttor being the largest and dating back to 1332.

Visitors can also enjoy a ride on the Cochemer Sesselbahn (Chair Lift) for panoramic views and a visit to the Pinner Kreuz lookout.
The city itself is pretty small. Once you are done exploring the old town and shopping, there are prenty of outdoor activities outside the center to embark on.

Do you like hiking and wine? Then consider taking a hike through the Ernster vineyards following the winemaker.
Enjoy four samples of local wines directly in their vineyards, learning about the region’s biodiverse cultivation practices.

Wine Tasting
A visit to the Vinothek Walter J Oster in Marktplatz is a must for wine enthusiasts. The Oster family has been producing wine for 15 generations.

The wine shop offers a wide range of wines, spirits, brandies, liqueurs, and other gourmet items. It’s a perfect spot to taste local wines and pick up supplies for a picnic or hike. You can also buy smaller bottles for just 2.50 euro if you travel light.
Try a Red Vineyard Peach
The red vineyard peach is a local delicacy, with ruby red flesh that can be enjoyed in various forms, from jams to chutneys.
Cochem celebrates this special fruit with festivals like the Blossom Festival of the Red Moselle Vineyard Peach in April and the Red Moselle Vineyard Peach Day in September.

For a unique family activity, try footgolf on a real golf course. This sport combines soccer with golf, challenging players to navigate a football through various obstacles into a target hole with minimal shots.
I have never seen footgolf anywhere else in Germany, so you might want to seize the opportunity.
